Last day today: BAOU admission 2026 closes October 13, DEB ID must for distance learners

The window shuts tonight. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU) closes its July 2026 admission window today, October 13, 2026. If you were planning to apply for a BA, B.Com, BCA, MBA, MCA, or any of the university’s 80-plus distance and online programmes, today is the last chance. The university’s portal now shows October 13 as the revised closing date, and students still on the fence should finish all four mandatory steps well before the day ends.
BAOU is Gujarat’s only state open university and runs all its programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online modes. Admissions here are merit-based. There is no entrance exam for UG and most PG programmes, which makes BAOU a popular fallback for students who missed regular university deadlines or want a degree they can pursue alongside a job.
Four steps stand between you and the deadline
BAOU’s admission process has four stages, and missing any one of them means the form does not go through. The order matters, because later stages ask for IDs created in the earlier ones:
- Create your ABC ID (Academic Bank of Credits), the digital locker that stores your academic records.
- Create your DEB ID on the UGC Distance Education Bureau portal, which is compulsory for ODL and online learners across India.
- Complete GCAS registration for UG or PG admission.
- Fill and submit the BAOU application on the official BAOU admission portal, upload documents, and pay the fee.
One warning: GCAS registration alone does not complete admission. You must still submit the BAOU application form, and admission is confirmed only after the university finishes online verification.
DEB ID: the step that trips up most applicants
The single biggest reason applications get stuck this cycle is the DEB ID. Under UGC-DEB rules, every student joining an ODL or online programme anywhere in India needs this unique learner ID, created free of cost on the UGC-DEB portal. BAOU is strict about it: incomplete applications without a valid DEB ID are rejected.
“Do not leave ID creation for the last evening. ABC ID, DEB ID, GCAS registration, and the BAOU form are four separate stages, and each can throw a verification error that eats up hours.”
Create the IDs early in the day. Verification errors and name mismatches between IDs and marksheets are the usual culprits that push students past the deadline. If the name on your ID does not match your marksheets, fix that before you start.
What you can study, and what it costs
The extension covers the full BAOU catalogue: UG programmes such as BA, B.Com, BCA, BBA, BSW, and BLIS; PG programmes including MBA, MCA, MA, M.Com, MLIS, and MSW; plus certificate, diploma, postgraduate diploma, vocational, and SWAYAM/MOOC offerings in ODL and online modes. Basic eligibility is Class 12 for UG programmes and a three-year bachelor’s degree for PG programmes. Course fees run roughly from Rs 2,500 to Rs 12,500 per semester, and the application form fee is Rs 300.
The one exception in the catalogue is B.Ed (ODL), which opens separately in the August session and needs an entrance test plus at least two years of teaching experience. Everything else on the list is merit-based.
There is no upper age limit for any BAOU programme, and students from any Indian state can apply; Gujarat domicile is not required. Students without a Class 12 certificate can first enrol in the Bachelor’s Preparatory Programme (BPP).
Missed it? The January 2027 cycle is next
BAOU runs two admission cycles every year, July and January. Students who miss today’s deadline can apply in the January 2027 session. But if distance education is the plan, it is worth comparing BAOU with other open universities whose windows have also been stretched this season: IGNOU’s July 2026 admission deadline was extended to October 13 too, which means today is effectively the last day for both of India’s big open universities.
Before you start the form, run through the college admission documents checklist so you have every marksheet, ID, and certificate ready. Today is not the day to discover that your transfer certificate is still with your school office.
