Today, 4 PM: IIT Delhi PhD and MS (Research) applications close for 2026-27

Follow us on Google

Today is the last day. IIT Delhi closes applications for its PhD and MS (Research) programmes at 4 PM on 29 October 2026, and the institute has said clearly that this deadline will not be extended. If you have been putting off the form, this is the final window for the second semester of the 2026-27 academic year.

The notice covers research programmes across IIT Delhi’s departments, centres, and schools. It is a separate cycle from the July intake, and it suits students who want to start their research in the January semester. The application portal opened on 9 October, so candidates have had about three weeks to apply.

The 4 PM deadline is firm, so do not leave it to the last hour

IIT Delhi’s admissions page states the last date for both national and international candidates as 29 October 2026 at 4 PM, with no extension under any circumstances. Portals slow down near closing time, and a payment that fails at 3:55 PM leaves almost no room to try again.

National candidates apply through the PG admissions portal, while foreign nationals have a separate portal on the same admissions page. Pick the right one at the start: a form filed in the wrong category can turn into a rejected application, with no time left to fix it.

“The deadline will not be extended under any circumstances.” That one line from IIT Delhi’s notice is the whole story today: apply now, or wait for the next cycle.

Who can apply, and what marks do you need

The advertisement sets a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale, or 60 percent in aggregate, for General, OBC, and EWS candidates. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the bar is 5.50 CGPA or 55 percent. These are minimum marks across all years or semesters of the qualifying exam.

That minimum is only the starting point. Each department sets its own rules on top of it, covering the qualifying degree, the entrance exam, and any extra condition. The requirement of a GATE score or a national-level exam is waived for some graduates and students from centrally funded technical institutions, but the waiver does not apply to everyone. Read the information brochure and your department’s notice before you assume anything about your own case. Meeting the minimum marks does not guarantee admission.

Which subjects are open in this round

The round spans engineering, sciences, management, design, humanities, and interdisciplinary research. Departments named in the notice include Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Textile and Fibre Engineering, along with centres for artificial intelligence, atmospheric sciences, management, and data science. If your subject is on the list, check whether that unit is accepting applications this semester. Not every department opens seats in every cycle.

Students tracking other admissions this season should apply the same care to the AP LAWCET 2026 final phase registration and the CLAT 2027 registration deadline of 31 October: in every portal, a missed step costs a seat.

How much it costs, and how to apply

The application fee is Rs 200 for General, OBC, and EWS candidates and Rs 50 for SC, ST, and PwD candidates. Candidates pay any bank charges themselves. The process is fully online, and no hard copy of the form or fee receipt needs to be sent to the institute.

Apply like this:

  • Open the IIT Delhi PG admissions page and choose the correct portal for your category.
  • Read the information brochure and your department’s instructions first.
  • Register, fill in your personal, academic, and programme details, and upload the documents the portal asks for.
  • Check every entry against your certificates, pay the fee, and submit before 4 PM.
  • Save the final form, the payment receipt, and your application number.

A correction window runs from 30 October to 1 November 2026. It helps if you spot a typo after submitting, but it is not a second chance to start an application. Submit a complete form today.

Money support for full-time researchers

Financial assistance is available for full-time PhD and MS (Research) students, subject to the conditions in the information brochure. Sponsored and part-time candidates may also be admitted, depending on seat availability, and the brochure lists the minimum experience needed after the qualifying degree for those categories. If you are applying part-time, check the experience rule for your category before paying the fee.

What to do in the next few hours

Start with the brochure, not the form. Confirm that your department is open this semester, that your degree and marks meet its bar, and that you have the documents ready to upload. Then fill the form in one sitting, review it slowly, and submit well before 4 PM.
