Jan 18, 2027: IIT Madras Launches 'Finishing School' to Make Biotech Students Industry-Ready

If you are a biotechnology student heading into your final year, IIT Madras has opened a new door for you. The institute has launched UDYOG, an industry-oriented “finishing school” that promises to turn classroom biotech students into job-ready biomanufacturing professionals. The first batch starts on January 18, 2027, and early-bird registration closes on December 15, 2026.

The programme, called UDYOG (Upskilling and Development for YOung Graduates), was inaugurated by IIT Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti on the campus on Wednesday, October 21. It is being run through SynBioME, the IIT Madras-TICEL Biofoundry, and is coordinated by Prof Guhan Jayaraman of the Department of Biotechnology.

3 months online, 4 weeks in the lab, then industry interviews

The finishing school follows a three-stage training pathway. The first stage is three months of online learning delivered through IIT Madras’s Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE). Industry experts will take lectures, and students will watch demonstration videos on industrial practices.

Students who complete the online part will be considered for the second stage: a four-week intensive, hands-on programme at the IIT Madras Biofoundry. This is where they get real exposure to laboratory processes and biomanufacturing workflows, not just textbook diagrams.

After the lab training, selected participants get to engage with industry partners and sit for interviews for long-term internships. The idea is simple: a clear path from academic learning to actual workplace experience.

Why IIT Madras built this now

India’s biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors are expanding fast. But companies keep saying the same thing: fresh graduates know the theory but lack practical expertise in industrial processes, analytical techniques, process development and regulatory practices. UDYOG is IIT Madras’s answer to that gap.

“AI also means academia-industry. It is becoming an absolute necessity that every discipline of Science and Engineering must look at this AI with care to make themselves relevant to the modern world. UDYOG is yet another effort taken by IIT Madras in this direction.” — Prof V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras

Prof Guhan Jayaraman, the programme’s principal coordinator, said the finishing school complements academic knowledge with industry-relevant training and exposure to real-world biomanufacturing practices. Industry voices backed the move too. Chella Pandian Pitchai of Biocon said industry exposure through internships and mentorship helps young people translate classroom learning into practical skills and prepare for careers in biotechnology.

Who can apply and the key dates

UDYOG is open to pre-final-year and final-year students pursuing BTech, MTech and MSc degrees in biotechnology and allied disciplines at colleges and institutes across India. That is a wide net. Students from any Indian college can apply, not just IIT students.

  • First batch begins: January 18, 2027
  • Early-bird registration closes: December 15, 2026
  • How to apply: submit an expression of interest on the official IIT Madras CODE portal page for the Biofoundry finishing school

The move also fits a wider shift visible in education news this month: institutions are racing to connect students with industry-ready skills. Google’s free AI Educator Series has now trained more than 80,000 Indian teachers, and a recent HP Futures 2026 survey found Indian students leaning hard into AI and deep learning. UDYOG puts IIT Madras in the middle of that same trend.
