15 November Is the New Last Date: NMMSS Scholarship Pays ₹12,000 a Year

Students who missed the first NMMSS deadline have got a second chance. The Union Education Ministry has pushed the last date to apply for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) for 2026-27 to November 15, 2026, and the school and district verification dates have moved too.

The extension was announced on October 31, the very day the old deadline was ending. It gives students two more weeks to finish their forms on the National Scholarship Portal, and it gives schools and district offices fresh dates to check those forms.

NMMSS scholarship 2026-27: the new dates in one place

Here is the revised schedule, side by side with the old one, so there is no confusion:

  • November 15, 2026: last date to submit your application (old date: October 31)
  • November 30, 2026: last date for Institute Nodal Officer (L1) verification (old date: November 15)
  • December 15, 2026: last date for District Nodal Officer (L2) verification (old date: November 30)

One point matters more than the rest. Sending the form is only step one. Your school’s nodal officer has to verify it by November 30, and the district officer has to verify it by December 15. A form still unverified after those dates does not move ahead, no matter how strong your marks are.

What the scholarship pays and who it is for

NMMSS is meant for bright students from families with low income, so they stay in school after Class 8 instead of dropping out. Every year, one lakh fresh scholarships go to students entering Class 9, and the money can continue through Classes 10, 11, and 12 on renewal. Selected students get ₹12,000 a year, sent straight to their bank account.

₹12,000 a year, paid straight into the student’s bank account, from Class 9 to Class 12 on renewal.

Three conditions decide eligibility. A student needs at least 55% marks in Class 7, with a 5-point relaxation to 50% for SC and ST students. Parents’ yearly income from all sources should not cross ₹3.5 lakh. And the student must clear the selection test their state or union territory conducts, and study in an eligible school.

Why so many students are still in the queue

By October 30, the ministry had received 90,483 fresh applications and 1,99,531 renewal applications for 2026-27. That is more than 2.9 lakh forms in all, and the portal has been open since June 1. With that many forms still moving through school and district checks, a hard stop on October 31 would have cut off students whose forms were ready but not yet verified.

This is the third time the date has moved this year, after earlier shifts to September 30 and then October 31. Students who were following the earlier NMMSS deadline of October 31 should now work to the new dates, not the old ones.

How to apply before November 15

If you have not applied yet, do not wait for the last day. Portal traffic and document problems always pile up near a deadline, and a form filed on November 15 still needs your school to verify it by November 30.

  1. Go to the National Scholarship Portal and finish your One Time Registration with your Aadhaar.
  2. Log in and pick NMMSS for the 2026-27 academic year.
  3. Fill in your personal, school, and bank details with care, and match the spellings to your school records.
  4. Upload the documents the portal asks for, in the format it asks for.
  5. Submit the form before November 15, 2026, and save the acknowledgement number.
  6. Meet your school’s nodal officer in person and confirm the institute-level verification is done before November 30.

Keep these papers ready before you start: your Class 7 marksheet, Aadhaar card, parents’ income certificate, proof of your school, bank details, and selection test result. Renewal students should log in and renew on the same portal, not file a fresh form.

A note for students appearing for the state test

The scholarship and the state selection test are two separate steps, and both have to be cleared. The test is run by your state or union territory, while the application and payment run through the National Scholarship Portal. Students preparing for state-level rounds, like those tracking the Maharashtra NMMS scholarship exam application, should keep the two processes apart: the exam picks you, and the portal pays you.

If your name is already on a selection list, November 15 is your real deadline now. File the form, chase the school verification, and check the portal dashboard to make sure the district check is marked complete by December 15. That last check is the one students forget, and it decides whether the money comes through.
