₹12,000 a Year: NMMSS Scholarship Window Closes October 31

Students eligible for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) have until October 31, 2026, to apply. The scheme pays ₹12,000 a year, and the Education Ministry has now told nodal officers across the country to make sure every application is verified on time.
This push followed a workshop in Bhopal on October 14, where the ministry told officials to move every application through school and district verification without delay.
What NMMSS pays and who it is for
NMMSS gives ₹12,000 a year to bright students from families with low income. The goal is simple: stop students from dropping out after Class 8 and help them finish school up to Class 12.
Every year, one lakh fresh scholarships go to students entering Class 9. The scholarship can then be renewed for Classes 10, 11, and 12 if the student keeps meeting the academic conditions.
To qualify, a student must have scored at least 55% in Class 7 (50% for SC and ST students). The parents’ annual income should not cross ₹3.5 lakh. The student must study in a state government, government-aided, or local body school. And for the fresh scholarship, the student must clear the selection test that each state or union territory conducts.
The three deadlines you cannot miss
October 31, 2026, is the last date to submit your application on the National Scholarship Portal. But submitting the form is only the first step. Two more deadlines follow, and both depend on other people verifying your application.
- October 31, 2026: last date to submit your application
- November 15, 2026: last date for Institute Nodal Officer (L1) verification
- November 30, 2026: last date for District Nodal Officer (L2) verification
Apply early and then check with your school to make sure the institute-level verification is done before November 15. If your school misses that date, your application cannot move forward, no matter how good your marks are. Students applying for other scholarships on the National Scholarship Portal this October face the same verification chain.
“The objective of NMMSS is to reduce dropouts after Class VIII and encourage students to continue their education up to Class XII,” says the Ministry of Education.
Why the ministry is pushing verification now
On October 14, officials from different states met in Bhopal with the Department of School Education and Literacy to review how NMMSS is working on the ground, including the verification problems states keep facing.
The ministry’s Economic Adviser A. Srija led the session, and NMMSS student awardees also shared their experiences. One clear message came out of it: nodal officers at the state, district, and institute levels must verify applications accurately and on time.
States and union territories conduct the selection test themselves, but registration, authentication, and payment all run through the National Scholarship Portal. That is why the verification chain matters so much. A form that sits unverified at your school never reaches the district officer, and the payment never gets released.
By September 30, the ministry had received 88,522 fresh and 1,97,133 renewal applications for 2026-27. If you have already applied, check your verification status on the portal dashboard.
