₹12,000/Year Scholarship Extended to October 31: 1 Lakh Seats, Do You Qualify?

The Education Ministry has pushed the NMMSS 2026-27 application deadline to October 31, 2026. Students who missed the earlier cutoff now get a fresh window to claim the ₹12,000-a-year scholarship on the National Scholarship Portal.

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme gives 1 lakh fresh scholarships every year to Class 9 students from poor families. You stay eligible through Classes 10, 11, and 12 if you renew on time. The money lands directly in your bank account, so there is no middleman and no paperwork queue at a government office.

This matters right now because lakhs of students are already in line. The ministry’s own data shows 88,522 fresh applications and 1,97,133 renewal applications had come in by September 30. With one month left on the clock, this is the last call.

Revised NMMSS calendar: three dates you cannot miss

The new schedule covers both the application and the checks that follow it:

  • October 31, 2026: last date to submit the student application
  • November 15, 2026: Institute Nodal Officer (L1) verification closes
  • November 30, 2026: District Nodal Officer (L2) verification closes

Read that list twice. Filling the form is only step one. Your school must verify it by November 15, and the district office must finish its check by November 30. An unverified form wins nothing.

Who can claim this ₹12,000 a year

Five conditions decide your eligibility:

  • You study in a state government, government-aided, or local body school. Private-school students cannot apply.
  • You scored at least 55% in Class 7. SC and ST students need 50%.
  • Your parents’ total yearly income is ₹3.50 lakh or less. You will need an income certificate.
  • You clear the selection test conducted by your state or Union Territory government. The scholarship goes to students entering Class 9 through this test.
  • You complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the NSP before applying.

One thing the ministry is strict about: the scheme exists to keep students from dropping out after Class 8. If your family can afford to continue your studies comfortably, this money is meant for someone who cannot.

Apply on the official portal in five steps

Everything happens on the National Scholarship Portal. There is no offline form and no fee.

  • Complete your OTR. Register on the portal with your Aadhaar details before anything else. Without OTR, the application page will not open for you.
  • Log in and pick the scheme. After OTR, log in to the NSP and select the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme from the list.
  • Fill your details carefully. Enter your name, school, class, marks, and bank account details exactly as they appear on your documents. One wrong digit in the account number can delay your payment for months.
  • Upload the documents. Keep your Class 7 marksheet, income certificate, bonafide certificate, and caste certificate (if applicable) ready as clear scans.
  • Submit, then chase the verification. After submitting, download the acknowledgement and ask your school’s nodal officer to verify your form well before November 15.

Students from technical courses should note that the AICTE Pragati Scholarship also closes on October 31 on the same portal, with ₹50,000 a year for eligible girl students.

“Submitting the form is not the finish line. Your school and district office must verify it by November 15 and 30, or the application dies at their desk.”

One mistake that costs students their scholarship every year

Every session, thousands of eligible students lose this money without ever knowing why. The form sits unverified at the school because nobody followed up. The institute nodal officer has hundreds of forms and a hard cutoff of November 15. If yours is still pending on November 14, you are in trouble.

The fix is simple and boring: apply in the first two weeks of October, not the last. Then walk up to your school office and confirm your form shows as verified on the portal. Check the district status in the last week of November. Two visits beat one lost year.
